I have a misdemeanor for retail theft and am considering training for a career in criminal justice as a victim's advocate. How is this going to affect my future career and also what is one of the best online training schools available?

I have worked in retail for 11 years. There is a list, called the "black list" of all people who have worked retail and been caught stealing either merchandise or money. They are put on a list to Do Not Hire.

But, I do not think it will mess you up in the academy.
Good luck Hon, in your new start!

The classification of misdemeanor or felony depends on the value of the theft. In California, if the theft was less than $400, it's a misdo, if it's $400 or more, it's a felony. Also, if the amount is over $400 and he entered the store with the intent to steal, then it was a "burglary"... or.. entering a building with the intent to commit a felony... The burg can also be charged as a misdo or a felony... Too many unknown factors to help you much.

Since retail theft isn't a victimless crime, you may find it hard to get a job as a victim's advocate. I think that your record would show a conflict of interest.

Your serious?

Your training won't be affected. Online schools take money from everybody. But employers providing that line of work will likely frown on your record.
