Mid-air colisions do have a variety of causes, but we have many ways of avoiding such happenings... There's a deveice called transponder that "warns" the planes of a possible crash. Every plane has one of those and they MUST be turned on all the time... It seems the American pilot had his transpoder turned off, that's illegal, and he might have done it because he was going to do something without being noticed. Also, airplanes have "highways", and the minnimum difference between each of them is 1000 feet. The Gol airplane was 37000 feet above the ground and the Legacy should be 36000 above the ground, but it was 37000, and since the Legacy's transponder was turned off, both of the pilots couldn't notice it would happen.
A lot of people ask why they hadn't try to avoid the crash when they saw each other as well. In fact, they couldn't even see each other. Imagine something coming against you at a 1600km/h speed... It just appears... They say the effect of the Legacy cutting the Gol seemed a hot knife in butter.
Well, I hope I could explain a bit more.

I am following the investigations on this accident and apparently the smaller plane may have some involvement with the crash, yes. What makes me ABSOLUTELY mad is that the pilots are criticizing the air control procedures saying that they are awful - who the heck does he think he is, since he had the TRANSPONDER of the plane turned off, bluntly ignored tower instructions, and did illegal maneuvers (such as flying at 37k feet in altitude instead of 36k, which was confirmed illegal by a big shot aviation lawyer from New York on the papers yesterday!!)
I say...the experts will tell the real story. Just wait and see!!! Now we have155 innocent people dead!

your point? Mid air collisions have a variety of causes, as you trying to say this was a deliberate act by the corporate pilots because they were American?

Yes I heard that. My understanding is that there were Terrorists on board. And they brought the plane down on purpose.
