the heater may not be the cause, but it will be part of the solution. get a new heater if you haven't already and get the water temp back up and add a small amount of aquarium salt. I'm not sure what fish you have so the amount of aquarium salt that is ok is something you will need to research. The people over at about.com in the freshwater aquarium forum are pretty good for this kind of advice. post in the illness section and hopefully a guy named carl will answer, if he doesn't you'll still get really good advice.

Usually caused by poor water conditions. I'd say whoever was watching them didn't clean the tank. Do a water change, and do them every week about 20-30% depending on the amount of fish in the tank.
Buy some MelaFix from the fish store and treat according to the instructions. Can put a little aquarium salt in the tank, if there's no scaleless fish in there-cory cats, plecos, loaches, etc.

Fin rot is one of the most serious conditions a fish can have, it has got nothing to do with you heater, it is down to dirty water. Do a quarter water change and put treatment in, if it gets worse take the fish out and kill it before it spreads to your other fish. Then treat the water again. Good luck it is a nightmare to get rid of.

Yes because of the stress from the temp being too cold. When they are stressed their immune systems cannot fight disease and anything can attack them. Fin rot is pretty serious and you need to act quickly. You need to change 25% of the water and then treat them immediately. I have saved fish before with fin rot but act quickly.

Whenever fish are stressed, like when they are exposed to sudden or prolonged temperature drops, they are weakened and more likely to have problems. The lack of a heater doesn't cause the rot but, it does make your fish more susceptible to disease. Replace the heater and treat the water.

A change in temperature will stress the fish and weaken them enough for bacteria to take hold. I also would suggest that he was overfed while you were away. Prepare a large amount of water with one teaspoon of freshwater salt for every five gallons of water and change a small amount of water (10%) every day.
