Because it hurts some/many people to actually think?
I mean, Jeez, Louise - thinking's an EFFORT. Many people seem to prefer being spoon-fed "pablum" for their "entertainment."

I don't, and I resent your implication that I do.
A question like this one prompts me to respond with, "Why does EVERYONE generalize and post questions like this?"
A fairer quesiton, for you would be, "Why do SOME people prefer emptiness to substance?" THEN someone would be able to post a fair response, such as, "There have always been people who make this kind of choice. In ancient mythology there were stories of the Land of the Lotus Eaters. It was a place where people would lose themselves in a drug induced state, free of worries and any fears. They WERE happy, but their lives were empty of substance."
See, there is an answer to a real question. My rephrased question does not assume that EVERYONE thinks the same way. It also reconizes that the phenomenon you describe is nothing new. A properly phrased question shows genuine thought behind it. That it is more than simply the regurgitating of some spoon fed pap, from someone ELSE's brain.

It's not that people enjoy it so much as it is the only thing that gets media attention:
Take the "substance" out of movies,
The "Facts" out of news,
The "truth" out of non-fiction,
The "DJ" out of radio,
And the "protest" out of music...
-all you have left is, as you say, "Emptiness"
What better way to conquer a nation, than to dumb it down and keep it occupied by trivial pursuits?

Emptiness provides that instant gratification we have been taught to need by television and other media. Same with sugar high, drugs, easy sex... Feels great for about a minute, then empty, empty, empty...

substance is composed of mediocrity on this plane.
where you percieve emptiness fill it with your own reality, there, and only there, does true substance of any meaningful quality exist.
