Yes you can - you are legally entitled to what is referred to as 14 day money back - this allows you to return the goods providing they are in original condition and you would be liable for any charges incurred by making calls since you got the phone. It sounds like they are talking about the EU 7 Day Distance Selling Regulation which allows you to return any goods that were not seen within 7 working days.
Easy example of this is buying a stereo or something. You go to Comet and see a stereo you want - if you buy it in the store, you can NOT take it back. However, if you went home and ordered that stereo over the phone or online - then you have the 7 working days (this is EU LAW - not general rules). If they ask why you can even say something like you don't like the colour.
If they kick up a fuss at this point ask them to explain their reasons why and to give it you in writing. If they question this just state they you will be going to Citizens Advice and contacting Trading Standards. 9 times out of 10, when people say this the companies back down and allow it but they will normally say something like (just this once or we'll make an exception with you).
Good luck - hope this helps

Read the fine print in your contract, if their is a way of returning it then it will be stated, more than likely in the tiniest writing you've seen.
Have you tried going to a different phones4u store, as maybe the guy who soled it doesn't want to loose the commission from selling the phone(if that's the way it works, i don't know). Just make an excuse that the other store is too far or something and that the phone was for your sisters birthday but she already got a better phone so you don't need it now.
If all else fails contact trading standards and see if they have any ideas for you.
Good luck

Absolutely.
You CAN legally cancel your contract BUT:
The phone MUST be in it's original condition.
You may be liable for any calls made (at a standard tarrif rate).
Ensure the direct debit is CANCELLED at your bank - it can take several months for a company to issue a cancelation notice to a bank.

You should be able to...
There i also a law about credit services. Basically if you take an offer of creid (card, loan, phone etc) you have upto 14 days to change your mind and cancel...but you are then liable for any usage within that period

Yes.
As has been said above the phone must be returned in its packaging and in the same condition.
Also go to your bank and cancell the direct debit for the phone contract

yes you can- if they say you can't ask to speak to the head people then cause a stir- they always make excuses because it effects the store's commission structure
