I have been to Egypt a couple of times on business trips. Both times I stayed only in Cairo. The Nile river is the life line of Egypt and 95% of all Egyptians live within 10 miles of its banks. Those parts of Egypt that are distant from the Nile are desolate and barren. Without the Nile, survival in Egypt would be extremely difficult.

The Nile flows from the South in the Ethiopian highlands (where it is called the Blue Nile) and also from the South from Lake Victoria (where it is called the Blue Nile). These two tributaries merge in Khartoum (capitol of Sudan) and continues northward through Sudan, through Egypt and ends at the Mediterranean Sea. While in Sudan, the Nile actually flows North, then makes a bend and flows South, then another bend and continues Northward to Egypt! The Nile is the longest river in the world and is 4,160 miles long.

The lower Aswan Dam and Upper Aswan Dam create Lake Nasser, a huge resorvoir of water that lies 73% in Egypt and 17% in Sudan. The two countries have treaties as to how rhe water is to be utilized by the two countries. The dam has been both helful and damaging. It is helpful in that it has controlled previous harmful flooding in Egypt. It is harmful in that the natural nutrients that the river previously brought to Egypt are no longer there. The farmers must rely heavily on expensive fertilizers.

The Nile runs right through Cairo, Egypt's largest city. There is an island in the middle of the river where the wealthiest people live. Cairo is extremely overcrowded, far exceeding the 10,000,000 people it was designed to hold. You will see autos as well as carts pulled by oxen going down the streets.

The souks (walled portions of the city) have extremely narrow walkways and are a bit frightening if you have claustrophobia. Neat things to see there are the Sphinx, the pyramids, the Nile, the people, and the Souks. I went into one of the pyramids and was accompanied by an Egyptian carrying a lantern so we could see. In many places you had to stoop down and nearly crawl to get from one chamber to the next. Needless to say, I stayed very close to my Egyptian guide, as I was afraid of being lost in there forever.

I also took a ride on a camel, which was fun. Getting on and off is exciting because you can be easily be thrown off if you don't sit and lean as instructed.

The people were very friendly and intelligent. Most of the people I encountered spoke fluent English. Cairo has many fine hotels and restaurants.

It's a good place to visit, but don't get too far away from the Nile.

Egypt is geographically situated in Africa, with the Sinai Peninsula, east of the Suez Canal, connecting as a land bridge to Asia.

Covering an area of about 1,001,450 square kilometers (386,560 square miles), Egypt borders Libya to the west, Sudan to the south, and Israel and the Gaza Strip to the northeast; on the north and the east are the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, respectively.

Egypt (Misr) is the sixteenth most populous country in the world. The vast majority of its 78.8 million population (2006) live near the banks of the Nile River (about 40,000 km² or 15,450 sq miles), where the only arable agricultural land is found. Large areas of land are part of the Sahara Desert and are sparsely inhabited. About half of the Egyptian people today are urban, living in the densely populated centres of greater Cairo, the largest city in Africa and the Middle East, and Alexandria.

Egypt is famous for its ancient civilization and some of the world's most ancient and important monuments, including the Giza Pyramids and the Great Sphinx of Giza; the southern city of Luxor contains a particularly large number of ancient artifacts such as the Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings. Today, Egypt is widely regarded as the main political and cultural centre of the Arab and Middle Eastern regions.

I've lived in many parts of Egypt. It's great for tourism [long or short stays]. It has LOTS of historical places to visit: [ Pharoanic like in Aswan and Luxour cities,, lots of temples and monuments, really gorgeous + also Islamic : like in Cairo and some other cities,, old mosques and beautiful castles of great emperors + also some Greek/ Roman monuments mainly in Alexandria + also if you're interested in the sea there are two (the medeterranian and the red sea and both have great coral reefs and awesome diving, snorkling and skiing trips all the time)+ safari trips: Egypt has loads of empty deserts full of gorgeous looking mountains and some fossils. a safari trip in Dahab or Sinaii would be great with a 4wd (hiking and camping are best there)]

that's all about tourism, but as for the cities.. well Cairo is the capital and it has all: from poorest to richest places to live in, shop or do anything so you'll probably find it all there.
Alexandria follows: It's beautiful with great weather, less polluted and crowded than Cairo and has a great library (Bibleothequa Alexandrina) with millions of books, lots of museums and great panoramic shows of Egyptian history. also the planitarium is great there XD
I ,personally, live in Alex. and think it's the best to live in.
As for tourism, it's your choice =)
All in all, you're most welcome here in Egypt and be sure that everyone wants you here. The people will definately as friendly as ever with you :D
P.S: if you want warm weather, then wait for the Fall

Egypt is one of the most beautiful places on the earth with a lot of famous and historical places. Last year I went there to spend my vacation with my family. I enjoyed a lot. People of Egypt are very good in nature and helping. Nile cruise is so beautiful and attractive place that I can’t forget. Once again I want to visit that place.
