A few friends and I have started wearing a simple black and white stripe ribbon in the "support loop" style to show our commitment to non-violence in our personal lives.

If you can't find a black and white stripe ribbon then you can use a black one together with a white. It commemorates the little girls who died as peaceful non-violent people.

This is similar to the Dunblane Tartan ribbon worn by people in Scotland a few years ago to speak out against violence against children.

On Wednesday 13 March 1996, unemployed former shopkeeper Thomas Hamilton walked into the Dunblane Primary school armed with two 9mm Browning HP pistols and two Smith and Wesson .357 revolvers. He was carrying 743 cartridges.

After gaining entry to the school, Hamilton made his way to the gym hall and opened fire on a class of 5-6 year olds, killing or wounding every person present bar one pupil. Fifteen children and a teacher (Mrs. Gwen Mayor) died at the scene. He then went into the classroom next to the gym hall and fired a number of shots. The teacher had previously realized that something was wrong and told the children to hide under the tables. A number of bullet holes were found in the children's chairs leading to speculation that had the teacher not told them to hide, there might have been a lot more fatalities. Hamilton allegedly then fired one shot with one of his two revolvers pointing upwards into his mouth, killing himself instantly. A further fifteen children and three adults were rushed to the hospital as soon as the emergency services arrived; however, one of these children was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

This is nothing new. I once had a banner on an old website of mine with the Dunblane Ribbon on it.

You have to be careful about ribbon campaigns both gay teen suicide prevention, anti-misogynistic groups, illegal immigration support groups and Violence Against Christian Awaraeness groups have laid claim to white ribbons. Make sure the ribbon is distinct.
