y=x(squared)+2x-1
y=3x+5

solve for x=
2x-3y=9

solve algebraically-

y=4x-1

y=2/3x + 5

(i)
4(3x - 5) = 5(2x + 4)
12x - 20 = 10x + 20
12x = 10x + 20 + 20
12x = 10x + 40
12x - 10x = 40
2x = 40
x = 20

(ii)
2x + a = p
2x = p - a
x = p/2 - a/2

(iii)
y = x^2 + 2x - 1
y = 3x +5

3x + 5 = x^2 + 2x - 1
3x = x^2 + 2x - 1 - 5
3x = x^2 + 2x - 6
0 = x^2 + 2x - 3x - 6
0 = x^2 - x - 6
0 = (x - 3)(x + 2)
x = 3, x = -2

y = 3x + 5
y = 3(3) + 5 y = 3(-2) + 5
y = 9 + 5 y = -6 + 5
y = 14, y = -1

(iv)
2x - 3y = 9
3x + 3y = 11

3x + 3y = 11
3y = 11 - 3x

2x - 3y = 9
2x - (11 - 3x) = 9
2x - 11 + 3x = 9
5x - 11 = 9
5x = 9 + 11
5x = 20
x = 4

(v)
y = 4x - 1
3x + 2y = 20

3x + 2y = 20
3x + 2(4x - 1) = 20
3x + 8x - 2 = 20
11x - 2 = 20
11x = 20 + 2
11x = 22
x = 2

y = 4x - 1
y = 4(2) - 1
y = 8 - 1
y = 7

x = 2, y = 7

(vi)
y = (2/3)x + 5
x + 3y = -3

x + 3y = -3
x + 3((2/3)x + 5) = -3
x + 2x + 15 = -3
3x + 15 = -3
3x = -3 - 15
3x = -18
x = -6

y = (2/3)x + 5
y = (2/3)(-6) + 5
y = -4 + 5
y = 1

x = -6, y = 1

ok, here goes.
4(3x-5)=5(2x+4)
12x - 20 = 10 x +20
12x-10x = 20+20
2x = 40
x =20

2x +a=p
2x=p-a
x = (p-a)/2

y= xsq +2x-1 with y = 3x+5
3x+5 = xsq +2x -1
3x-2x -xsq = -1 -5
x - xsq = -6 or x + 6 = xsq

2x-3y = 9 3x+3y=11
2x = 9+3y 3x = 11-3y
x = (9+3y)/2 x = (11-3y)/3
