Being a top or bottom indicates the sexual or social position in a gay couple. Typically a "top" is more masculine, dominant, and the one giving it in sex. The "bottom" is more femanine, submissive, and the taker. (sorry if that's too graphic).

Think of a straight couple in a missionary position. The man is on top, the woman on bottom.

A top is the inserter. A bottom is the person who likes to be inserted. It's important because two tops don't make a bottom and two bottoms don't make a top. You need a top and a bottom to have a sexual relationship. In addition to this, there is also someone called a versatile or switch. This is someone who can be either top or bottom, depending on their mood.

Male and female sex is arguably "more natural" as the genitalia are clearly opposites in nature (one a goes-in-to and the other a comes-out-of...rod and hole...bat and cave....pitcher and catcher). For this reason the general "roles" that the man and woman play in sex are pretty clearly defined. The guy goes into the girl...done, no questions asked.

In the gay world, especially for gay men, there is no such "well defined" 'who goes into whom' set of rules or expectations. Some gay guys are quite willing to "go in to" as well as "be entered". Some only like one or the other.

In my opinion it's more of a domination vs. submission thing as well as literal. Tops are usually the more dominate in bed with bottoms being the more submissive. As far as the literal person on top and person on bottom....well....use your imagination there!

God says, its not important for gay life. This is hetrosexual sterotyping which tries to align gay men to a male/female role so that it can "fit" their world view. There are people who are more comfortable in certain positions, but with the right person anything goes. God does not agree with this sterotyping.
