President Chavez has purchased not only 100,000 AK-103 rifles from Russia, but also the ability to construct such rifles at his own factory locate in Venezuela. Other purchases also include soviet made jet fighters and helicopters.
Despite the weapons purchases, Venezuela is still considered a soft target when compared against the US military. The US has superior air and naval power that would make short work of the Venezuelan military, with ground forces that could clean up the remnants. Drawback would be occupation, as Venezuela offers excellent terrain for guerrilla warfare.
Yet, these new arms purchases could be a threat to neighboring countries. Indeed, Venezuela is suspected of having ties with FARC, the leftist rebel group engaged in war with the federal government of Colombia for over 30 years. It is perceived that Venezuela, being sympathetic to leftist causes, would be more than happy to supply such munitions to any left bent group with a desire to start an insurrection.

all of us is ignorant. there is plenty information accessible, no person is familiar with all of it. Obama have been a senator for a short era and foreign places coverage isn't his stongest element. Bush made an absolute cock up on the initiating of his presidency, Chavez is attempting to stress the placement that venezuela and latin usa of america are no longer US zones of impact of their empire construction video games any further. Will it paintings? nicely the diplomats and civil servants are a similar below Bush as Obama, so it may take time, however the accepted coverage has to alter, to allow latin usa of america to advance for itself. Chavez is basically a disruptive impact in case you think of from an american "enable´s make money out of those people jointly as they stay undesirable" form of attitude. Chavez is familiar with what he's doing, he has been in means longer than Obama could be. this is a sport with a purpose, those issues should not be considered in an hassle-free way.

We have neighbors doing the same thing a LOT closer than Venezuela.
Chavez' regeime is a much bigger threat as an influence on OTHER oil producers, some of whom have been hostile to the US for a lot longer. Have you noticed that we still buy oil from them? Only just last week, the 7-11 convienience store chain announced that it would stop buyng gasoline from Venezuela.
Have you noticed that we still buy oil from Iran?
It's not so much their weapons we should fear. It's the power they hold over our fuel supplies we should worry about.

He may be a threat to the US and his neighbors but not for buying weapons from Russia. Would he be less of a threat if he bought them from the US, China, South Africa or Israel?

I would say having someone as mentally ill as Kim Jong Il on this hemasphere is a threat to be reaconed with... Him getting in bed with Mahmood and Putin is a dangerous situation for sure. Perhaps Pat Robertson had it right about assassination..

No.
The US is the biggest threat to the US for unilaterally invading other countries and acting out imperialistic ambitions with the result of an increase of anti-american sentiment, and an increase in terrorists opposed to the US.

Countries have a sovereign right to buy weapons if they so choose. If the US won't sell them the weapons then it only makes sense that they'd get them somewhere else.
