The '03 Raptor had some major design issues - mainly the transmission - and also the airboots as mentioned.

If you find a low hour '03 that's had the transmission upgrade done http://www.powroll.com/tech_specs_raptor_tranny.htm , the manifolds updated or modified, and the a-arms replaced, then it's just as good as the 02-03.

However, if you're looking at an 02-03 for about the same money as an upgraded 01, I'd do the newer model.

Whatever year, I'd recommend staying with one that has a stock engine - or just mild upgrades. The Raptor is a great machine, but can be fragile if it's built.

By 03 Yamaha had installed items to help keep the carbs fro blowing off in case of backfire. However all the 660 engine have an inhearant problem with the starter clutch, make certain that this has been replaced when buying.
