I have joint compound dry wall tape and fine grit sandpaper. I used spackle but it came out soft.

Dents - just fill in with the joint compound. If they are deeper then 1/4 inch, do it in smaller then 1/4 inch steps and let dry completely before you apply the next course. Sand smooth and paint the wall.
Cracks - I like to scrape the crack out to about the width of the blade on the scraper (1/8 inch), then fill crack with joint compound, apply a good fiberglass tape over the crack, and then feather the fill over the tape out over a distance of 12 inches either side of the crack. Allow to dry, sand and paint the wall.
Corners - The make metal corner pieces that have the recess for the joint compound if the corners are really torn up. Make sure you remove the old corner piece if you need to do this. If it's just cracked compound on the joint, fill with joint compound and allow it to dry. Sand and paint wall.

Joint compound is intended for application of thin layers; when used to fill holes it cracks as it dries. Use the spackling compound, but allow it to dry before further treatment.

If the holes aren't very big, it's pretty easy....prime the area first (the joint compound won't stick very well, otherwise), use your knife to run over the hole once with joint compound, place a peice of tape over the hole, smooth it out with your knife loaded with more compound, and feather out the edges...a pro won't have to feather out but maybe 1/2 to 1 inch depending on the size of the hole, but without much experience, you will probably have to feather out quite a bit. After the compound dries, sand it smooth....make sure you prime it before you paint. Good luck.
