One of the definitions of landing is a place where a person or object are landed. So if you think about it a person walking up or down stairs land at the top/bottom.
Or it could be a place where people can land safely if they trip or down the stairs without having to go all the way down.

I always thought the landing was the flat area in-between the next set of stairs.

Its actaully at the bottom of the stairs that is called the landing. Its because when you fall down the stairs... thats where you land.

Because that's what they call it. It also applies to any landing you have part way up the stairs.

because when you are travelling up and down stairs, you are not really on a floor, you're between floors.. when you get to a floor you step off the stairs onto the floor and then you've "landed" on that floor..

Good question. I'd advise you not to leave the light on above it. I left my landing light on and I now have a Boeing 747 parked on it!
