My wife is sick so she is going to the doctor today and making it a pre-conception visit too.

I can't make it there because they only do these appointments duirng the day and I have work.

What questions should a woman ask her doctor at a pre-conception appointment?

Also, what happens at a pre-conception appointment?

Anyone have one?

Usually they do a pap smear if she hasn't had one in the past 12 months, check things like weight, blood pressure, etc. They will ask about her periods and the regularity of them. If they suspect any problems they will order bloodwork. They will put her on prenatal vitamins and some doctors do a blood test to check for rubella immunization.

I would ask the doctor to do an examination and a pap smear to make sure it's normal.

My OB did some routine blood work to check my thyroid and for hormonal imbalances.

I was educated on charting my daily bbt (basal body temperature) so we would know if/when I was ovulating. There are other ways of checking, such as ovulation kits, but my OB liked to review my charts each month. You and your wife can also check out fertilityfriend.com. She can learn how to chart her bbt and do it on the site for free. There is also valuable information about ovulation and conception on the site.

I also received a prescription for pre-natal vitamins. It's good to take them when ttc because the folic acid in them is very important for early fetal development.

Other than that, just have her review her medical history with the doctor to make sure there aren't any medical issues that might interfere with conception. Make sure she informs the doctor of any medications that either of you are taking - either Rx or OTC.

I just scheduled a regular physical and told my doc I wanted to start trying to get pregnant in a few months. She did a full pap and pelvic exam since I was due for one, along with the standard check of blood pressure, etc... We talked a bit about my diet and activity level and whether or not I'm already taking folic acid (which I am.) Since I'm not experiencing any troubling symptoms of any sort and have already been screened for STDs, that was about it. The one thing I forgot to ask her opinion on was a flu shot for this season; I don't ever get one because I haven't had the flu in years and years, but getting it while pregnant could be an issue so I'm going to ask her what she thinks about that.
