Im getting a tortoise in a couple of weeks, but im real, real confused with the lighting thing. Could any people with knowledge in this area please help. I have herd several different things, one was that there should only be 1 light which supplies UVA/UBV and anohter is just 1 light providing UBV and another was a UBV strip light and a normal reptile basking bulb? Help please.....

1. What kind of tortoise? It does not matter a ton, but it may affect some choices. Some torts need strong, direct lighting, while othes are more used to a more diffuse light.

2. Tortoises are ALWAYS better off outside where the natural sun can do the work- assuming you live in a good habitat. Not really an option for many of us, though.

3. There is no absolute 'one right way' to do this. However, one of the best articles I have seen on the subject is http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/care.htm#Lighting

4. Part of your answer will be what is locally available, what can you afford, what do you have sockets and outlets for, do you need the extra heat...

5. Bottom line, to me: If your bulb offers all necessary wavelengths and intensities, great! If not, you supplement the weak areas.

personally i recomend steering away from using light bulbs for heat because in the wrong conditions they can be fatal. i would buy a small heat mat that doesnt need a thermostat and use a low wattage 20 or 40 watt bulb to light the enclosure. some tortoises can be acclimatised to normal room temperature or even be kept in the garden.

you want to maintain the nice and cozy temperature and complete spectrum elementary on for fairly some the day yet turn it off at nighttime. i for my section favor a vivarium because you could administration the nice and cozy temperature extra perfect. The basking section needs to be round 80 5-95 tiers farenheit and the different end of the tank needs to be round 10 tiers cooler. in the summer they could bypass outdoors in the daylight hours, yet presented that they are over 4 years previous. they favor supplementations including to thier nutrition usually ideally one which supplies calcium as well. Ive saved tortoises for years so in case you want extra suggestion e-mail me, ill be satisfied to assist

Depending on the tort. You will most likely need a UVB bulb (long tubelike bulb) and also a Basking bulb (household bulb).
