My friend moved into her house two years ago. At the time she called transco and tried to find who her supplier was. Also called all the suppliers, none had her property on file. Now british gas has called to say her property is unknown. Can they bill her for the last two years?

But she has never been sent a bill at all. And does not know who her supplier is. A man from British Gas called round but her mum answered and said she didn't know anything. What should she say to the man when he comes back? Should she say that she has a different supplier?

Yes they can and they have up to six years to pursue the debt in court, the six years continues to roll from the last dated communication, i.e. if in 5 yrs time they write again the 6 yrs starts from the letter received!

The previous occupier should have had a final reading. With no other occupant the supplier becomes Transco.
The new occupier contacts the supplier of their choice and the supplier contact Transco. A meter reading should be taken with a couple of days.
The previous occupier reading and the new reading should be the same.
Clearly, if the previous occupier, gave a false reading or the new occupier did not get a contact a gas supplier but used the supply then there will be problems.
A gas company (or any company) who provide services can claim up to 7 years worth of unpaid bills.

Technically, if she used the services, then she should pay it. But she shouldn't be required to pay any late fees or interest charges since it was their fault in the first place. She should contact them now that she knows who it is and ask for services. Its possible they might not even know they have been supplying her all along. Either way, she owes the money. However, it was their fault for not billing her and will probably be willing to work something out with her, perhaps a payment arrangement where she adds an extra 20-50 a month on her check to pay back fees.

Yes pay it or it will go on your credit report if it isnt already on it! Why ruin your credit for something that simple?
