well depending on what kind of item it is, you can actually use toothpaste and an old toothbrush, just dont use the kind that is whitening or has the little like mint pieces in it, it'll mess up the silver but use plain old toothpaste and a cheap toothbrush and scrub it then rinse it off and wipe it with a dry cloth and it works great.

If the piece has no stones, soak it in warm soapy water for a while then rinse and rub with a soft cloth or a soft brush.
If it has stones, consult a jeweler. Few stones are porous and could be affected. Most of the stones won't be affected.

sulferic acid, you will end up in the hospital with third degree burns and no fingers but you will be shiny and bling blinging at the burn unit!
