yeah so, i was thinking something along the line of 3.0+ ghz clock, 2-4+gb ram, 120+gb harddrive. 512+ graphics card ???

well, my question is that i am in the market for a high performace gaming desktop, willing to spend up to 2000 pounds (about $3800), im looking at the dell xps and the alienware area-51.
they both have about the same specs (what mentioned above), but both seems to have slow proccesing speeds, about 2.8ghz duo. (not sure about FSB).

does any1 have any advise for me about what pcs are best for gaming, and the minimum amount of ram/proccesing speed etc neccesary.

thanks.

@Travel in Paradise, thanks, looking for more about 4gb of ram DDR2.

i appreciate everyone helping, but please no more advise about AMD, using an AMD is NOT an option..

These AMD people don't know what they are talking about. Anyway, don't be concerned about clock speeds, clock speeds are no longer the defining factor in performance, it is about architecture. The Intel Core 2 Duo's are the fasters processors out right at the moment. I would say 2GB of RAM is enough, better to invest your money in Video Cards. Don't just look at the memory on Video Cards, there is a lot more to it. If you want specific help, e-mail me and I can find the perfect configuration to fit your budget.

Ya dude go with AMD they are faster then Intel I know Intel is like 3.0ghz and AMD is usually 2.8Ghz or so but an AMD chip at 2.8 is faster then an Intel 3.0 when your talking gaming you can Overclock it too so your ok. As far as video cards if its too much for SLI get a singel PCI-Express card from Nvidia and Yes 512MB is FAST! 1gig is enough although I have 2Gigs in my pc go with Crucial or OCZ or Corsair only dont go cheap on the video, sound or processor either thats what makes or breaks a gaming rig!

well :) i thnk ur allocated budget will get u an excellent gaming machine.
here are my recomendations.
First and most important are processor,
there is a wide range of processors available from both intel and amd, in area of single core cpu amd dominates, with low clock cycles but higher no. Instruction executed per second ratio, with slighthly lower prices. but in current age of multicore processor , intel leads the way. I would suggest for opting 2 topnotch dual core processor(64 bit is preferable but does not add to the perforamce to a larger extent) for creating dual core dual processor CPU.
This will greatly enhance your gaming experience,

Next comes the motherboard. when opting for mother u need to keep few things in mind. like system bus speed, PCIe slots, PCI slots, no. of Ram slots. SCSI/SATA interfaces ,RAID support. etc ASUS is notable for its motherboards with Nvidia chipset ,(nforce)

RAM- 2 GB ram is quite enough but, the more the merrier.:) memory should be of high speed and CAS /RAS timing should be as minimum as possible. DDR is most comon today , if u can get ur hands DDR2 then get it, :) also keep in mind ur motherboard is compatible with ram module u r choosing.

Graphics Card, You wont be able to differentiate b/w the performance of a gfx with 512 and a gfx card with 256 mb memory, that means , memory is not the first consideration when choosing a grafix card. It is the chip that distinguis one card from other. currently PCIe cards popular in the market, choose the top most card possible with atleast 256 mb VRAM.( the point spend on chip rather VRAM and if u still have a margin choos 512 VRM edition.)

then comes hard disk , u should opt for scsi drives with raid configuration for maximum speed burst.
:)
these are some points that you should keep in mind while shoping for a gaming pc/
Alienware products are popular among gamers, for their performance and system stability. 2.8ghz duo is fine.
minimum ram and procsesing power is quite undeterministic as more games come out everyday and each pushing technology harder and harder. you should buy the highest speed processor availabl in your budget limit.

happy gaming ::)

My best advice is to look for a machine using an AMD fx-60 cpu much faster than anything intel uses for gaming.

you desire to would desire to ascertain you get an i7 processor, a minimum of 8 gigs ram, and you desire a Nvidia pics card, the impressive one which you will arise with the money for. then you certainly would desire to be good. would value in easy terms a sprint extra nevertheless, yet you like some thing a good thank you to final, and not something you need to have have been given to replace in a twelve months.
