Not in all cases.
Laws differ from state to state, so you will need to check this in the state that you live.
Most spousal support is paid after the couple have been together for at least 10 years or more.
I am a woman and believe it or not, I do not believe in support, unless it is an extreme situation... In the world today, there is more opportunities for women and there is no reason why one cannot work. Even if it means lowering their standard of living. BMO -- Women have had it too good for too long and they are still hollering for equal rights, without giving back.
That is why pre-nups were invented.... :) To give the man a better chance to get out with the skin on their backs in tack.
Sorry gals, I have been on the other side of support too long and seen what it does to the women that get it.

Divorce is where alimony comes in, but if you are just split up, you need to keep good financial records of any support you are providing and be able to prove it... Only a judge can order alimony in a divorce. Alimony normally comes from the bread winner of the family. Some states do not have alimony at all, so it will depend by the state you are divorced in. Find out what the norms are in your state...

that's not true, alimony depends on how much you each make. If she made way less than you, for whatever reason (she was going to university, was staying home raising your kids, or you just wanted to be old fashioned and didn't want her to work), then yes you'll probably have to pay alimony.
Also, even if you're not married, like if you're common-law (what we call it in Canada when 2 people live together for longer than 1 year). If you're common-law for a long period of time (you know basically married, but no papers), she could still sue you for alimony!

Alimony isn't given in the U.S. much any longer. If the couple has children then there is child support but that is to maintain the home and provide for the children. If either spouse is capeable of making a living, has employable skills and CAN work then no alimony is provided.

We do not have alimony in Indiana. It is a community property state which basically means if you can't mutually agree on who gets what you sell it all and split the profits 50/50. Talk to a lawyer in your state to find out what the alimony laws are there.

It depends on the state. Texas has strict alimony laws and its hard to get, harder to keep. New York used to have a law where you pay until the wronged spouse remarries or dies. So discuss alimony with a lawyer in your state.

There is no alimony in Florida. I am a woman, and even if we didn't live in Fl I would never go for alimony. I think it is mostly for the rich, or those women who have sacraficed a career, or education to stay home, or those who are just plain greedy.

It depends on the state. I know when I got divorced I wasn't married long enough to get it & sometimes the wife is asked if she wants it. Also men can get alimony it depends how much your spouse makes (if she makes more than you)

It depends on the state you live in and reasons for the divorce and the attitudes of persons getting divorced. Some women go after it for mean reasons some do for help til they can get back on their feet espically if they have had no carrer because of staying at home or taking care of the kids. I hope thigs are worked out for the best for you no matter what it comes to be.

In most cases that is true but if you can prove that the man or the women is unfit then the other person will have the children. If you are both fit parents them you should split everything down the middle.
