Art is really subject to taste. But I personally think the most talented directors ever to grace the world of film include Akira Kurosawa, Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg and Ingmar Bergman.

I will probably go with Kurosawa, and Seven Samurai as his best movie. Hard decision to make.

I think the best director was John Ford and his best film was the Searchers.
It is still visually stunning and the story is powerfully told. Although he didn't win an Oscar for the Searchers he has won more Oscars than any other director.

Takashi Miike, his best film is The Happiness of the Katakuris. A fantasitic film.

There are other films I prefer over this one but I think Miike is unusual as his work is consistantly exceptional.

My favourite mainstream director is Tim Burton whose work has mostly been fantastic. Kurosawa is also very good.

I have a three way tie.

Clint Eastwood - direction of Million Dollar Baby

Woody Allen - direction of Sweet and Lowdown

Tim Burton - direction of Edward Scissorhands

(note that I admire these directors and most all of their movies)
Runner up is Ron Howard - Backdraft would be my fave of his (direction-wise)

Oliver Stone - Platoon. "Saddle Up. Lock and Load"

Ridley Scott - Gladiator

Alfred Hitchcock - The Birds

Alfred Hitchcock - Psycho. The shower scene is unsurpassed.

I'd have to go for AH and Psycho

What's yours?
