i'm confused because i want to know what causes 'shyness' and how to overcome it

It means fear of exposing yourself fully for who you really are naked and vulnerable, to another.
That why many try to overcome that natural feeling by drinking, taking drugs etc.
Shyness can also appear in someone who is over conscious of their presence and feels uncomfortable with that feeling.
You needn't at all of course your just feeling the real you. And its a natural part of new experiences and experiencing.

Sexually shy would mean you're reserved or insecure about exposing yourself physically and actuvely to your partner. Some people are shy about taking off their clothes in front of that person, standing naked before them. Others are conservative in their views of what is proper sexually and don't jump into trying different techniques or forms.
To get over it, usually the more comfortable you feel around your partner the less shy you become, but you can start by turning down the lights.
Attitudes towards sex will always play into just how liberal you become as far as sexual positions and acts go. So just try loosing up and having a good time. But remember that there's nothing wrong with refusing to participate in something you find sexually repugnant or distasteful.

You'll find that your caveman/woman intincts come out to play when you get turned on and even people who are dreadfully shy will have a good time.

pedestrian at best when it comes to what they will do, places they will do it, risks they will take. Thinking some things are nasty and are against trying new things. its an overall sexual lameness.
