The obvious choice here is a Macintosh. Macs can run Windows just like any other PC on the market, and believe me, I know, because I have an Intel Macintosh. You'll love it, no matter what kind of stuff you're in to. They are a little more expensive, but if you configure a PC from Dell with the same hardware, you'll pay just about as much. Apple uses great hardware. There's a million reasons to go with the Mac. There's no lack of software, that's a myth. So what if you have 9,000 more calendar programs available to the PC, Apple's iCal is better than all of them. It's all about quality, not quantity. The quality of available software titles for the Mac is much higher than those available for the PC. I've been using Mac for two years now, and I have yet to find anything that my Mac can't do. And believe me, I do a lot. Once you go Mac, you never go back. Trust me. I love my Macs, I have two of them. :-) If you have any questions about the Mac, just send me a message. I'll tell you anything you want to know about them.

Macs are not really more expensive. If you configure a PC to match a Mac's specs you'll find the price is usually the same (with some exceptions from sales and what not of course). People think Macs cost more because Apple doesn't really make a "cheapo budget" model of their computers, so you can and will find "cheaper" PCs out there, but they won't be as capable.
I switched to a Mac about 2 years ago and my experience has been wonderful. In general Macs and PCs can do the same things, it's how they do them that makes them different.
One advantage to being on Macs is that there are no active viruses and no spyware or adware. This means you can choose not to run 2 or 3 resource heavy apps in the background that scan for such things. Also, with the new line of Macs, you can actually install Windows side-by-side with OS X so you can do anything you like.
Look into Bootcamp, Parallels, and CrossOver - searching Yahoo will give you results. They're Mac apps that allow this in different ways.
So my recommendation is Mac.

mac's aint that expensive anymore.. unless you want a Mac G5!!
the Mac Mini is almost the same price as a decent computer system.. go for it if you like Mac.. doesnt make much difference since they now come with intel-based chips and windows is all set to be released for mac users...
