They are both words for the same thing. Period is tha common social word for mensus, both of them refer to the time of the month where a woman has a bloody discharge from her vagina, where the lining of her uterus is shed.

"period" refers most often among women, to that time each 28 or so days when her uterus sloughs it's lining and it comes thru her cervix and vagina in the form of bloody discharge.
