This would be on a Dell desktop

If it's running windows XP, it's quite easy. Just open the case, slide the fireware card (about $15) into an available empty PCI slot, replace the screw if any, and close the case. Installation of the software is usually automatic, although a CD is usually provided.

You can put a PCI card in an open slot on the motherboard. Firewire is very fast external bus standard that supports data transfer rates of up to 400Mbps (in 1394a) and 800Mbps (in 1394b). 1394b cards cost more.
