Thanks guys, I have all the others, what I am trying to figure out is how to get to the answer e.g the working? My work book has answers at the back, but I am trying to learn standard form, I ast did this in GCSE and it wasn't in my A Level, now its coming back to haunt me

Thanks guys, i think i know what i am doing now, i feel so stupid, it is really easy stuff, but i have a good idea how to tackle my sums. I am not bothered about those who think I am cheating as I haven all the answers anyway. I just wanted to know how to get to them. Cheers guys!

1) 385 in standard form is 3.85 x 10^2

2) 2.5 x 10^-6 is .0000025

and finally,

3) 1.765 x 10^-3 - 5.47 x 10^-4 =

yes you can leave an answer in standard form, i am doing A level physics right now and use it a lot, you shouldn't lose marks for leaving an answer in standard form unless is specifically states to use the actual number. the key things to remember are that the number has to be between 1 and 10 and that it is the decimal point which is moving, either to the right or left. if the answer in standard form is larger than the actual number it is a 10^-6 and if it is smaller it is 10^6. hope this helps xx

(1) (3.2) / (1.8) = 1.77777777777...forever (2) 10^5 / 10^(-3) = (10^5) * (10^3) = 10^8 (3) In scientific notation the answer is 1.77777777777... * 10^8 In standard form, simply multiply 1.777777777777... by 100,000,000 getting: 177,777,777.777...<<<<< Answer in standard form Note that the decimal point has been shifted 8 places to the right. That is equivalent to multiplication by 10^8.

What is standard form? Scientific notation?

The next thre answers below each has an error.

Chris says "your trying" when he means "you're trying"

mysstere fails to put the third answer into standard form.

The others are correct

Windy uses 10^3 in the third answer when it should be 10^-3.

1) 3.85 x 10^2
2) 0.0000025
3) write 5.47 x 10^-4 as 0.547 x 10^-3
then you have (1.765-0.547) x 10^-3 =
1.218 x 10^-3

1. 385
3.85 x 10^2
2. 2.5x10^6
0.0000025
3. 1.765x10^-3 -5.47x10^-4
0.001765 -0.000547=0.001218
= 1.218x10^-3
