From most historical standpoints - he wasn't real, meaning there was never a person who was a "King" and who went by the name of "Arthur".

However, there are some hints that a person in 5th and 6th century Britain did achieve some military successes against various invading peoples into post-Roman Britain. (Picts, Saxons, Irish).

He was brought up in a world of ever diminishing Roman values and laws, but he and many of his countrymen tried to maintain some semblence of a Roman way of life in Britain in the face of increasing invasions and settlements of peoples who were from beyond the old Roman boundaries.

As for Merlin, the sword Excalibur, Camelot etc etc, those are all later additions by medieval writers. "Arthur", or "Artorius" or "Riothamus" (whichever name he may have gone by) was a post Roman Celtic British military leader.

There is evidence to support the legend, though, unfortunately, most of the legend dates back to 10th and 11th century writings by the likes of Wace and Leyamon. The evidence that exists points to a tribal king in the Cornish area during the 4th AD fighting against the Romans during the final decline of the empire.

No, it is a legend. There is some speculation that he could have been modeled after a true king but he is not real. Check out Wikipedia.org, it can give you all the info

That the character in the books was based on the real person makes him real. When we make movies 'based on a true story' it does not make the person it really happened to 'unreal'.

St. NIcholas actually existed, for example...
