I am a university student and am wondering how extensive my local area networking capablilites are on the exisiting system. More specifically, would I be able to play a LAN game with only the people who use the same default gateway as I do or can I play with anyone in the university (everyone in the university has the same first two numbers in their IP address. Ex 192.168.xxx.xxx)?

You will be able to connect to anyone that is within your subnet.

So, if your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, then you will only be able to connect to anyone who has the first three octets as you... 192.168.0.xxx

If the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0, then it would be the first two octets... 192.168.xxx.xxx

depends on how they have their network set up mostlikely you can.

Your default gateway is only used when your machine needs to contact pcs or ip addresses out side of your local subnet. If the university is blocking access between these subnetworks that you are refering to then no you cant talk to people outside of your local network.

Mostlikely students in one dorm are on a diffrent network segment than others, however it all depends on the design of the school.
