As a hobby, I write short stories. I was working on one about young love, and was getting toward the end of it. And then, all in the same week, my long-time boyfriend broke up with me AND my cat died. Needless to say, I'm not the happiest camper at the moment. I want to write; I enjoy it very much; I think it would help me cheer up, but my muse, that little voice in my head that tells me what to write, has clammed up. What can I do to wake her back up?

Sorry to hear this, but it happens to most writers at least once...usually more than that! Whenever I encounter "writer's block" or just run out of steam, I watch movies or read books on some new subject. I try to get out and talk to new people, as their lives or philosophies often give me ideas. I just started a new book based upon a movie I saw about a writer (!) who switches identities with someone, combined with an annoying therapist I know who is sick of his work. Other ideas often come from my own family dramas, even old ones. I am working on a book based on my experiences and those of my friends during college.

Try keeping a journal, of both your past and things you observe around you. Don't worry...you're muse just had a nasty shock and needs to rest. She'll wake back up! Also, you can just get on the computer and start writing! Who knows what will happen?

Here are a couple links to get you going again...

Don't give up!

Try taking long walks or drives, i met a famous auther once and he said whenever he needed ideas he'd just take a walk and look at the scenery, usually you get ideas whenever this happens so bring a pencil and paper ;)

i can relate to the cat dying, last Jan. my cat smokey died, i have to say it was the worst thing that ever happened to me (and ive been through 2 tornadoes), im somewhat of a tiny pianist and after smokey died i just couldnt play anymore. i'm still not playing to this day

+ i got 2 new kittens, Anna and Tibbs (named for sargent tibbs the dog on 101 dalmations ;)] i found that the best way to put iodine on a dead cat wound (those kind of wounds never go away) is to get another 1, if you got your cat as a kitten you'll want to start with a kitten again. if the long walks and scenery don't help your writting voice, getting a new friend (don't look for cats online, go to your local pound) definately will.

So long.

In time it will return. Your mind is too distracted for creativity I suppose. Spending some quiet time reflecting on things and try and gain some perspective on the situation. Once you've developed a strategy for coping with this upset in life it won't occupy all of your time. Take some weekend trips and get out in nature or go to some museums or something to get the blood flowing.
