This may be a silly question, but...

My grandma keeps telling me not to raise my hands above my head, or reach for things in high places, because it could cause the cord to wrap around the baby's neck. Is this true, or is this just an old wives tale? She seems to think she knows it all, haha!

Thanks! :)

Thats an old wives tale, the cord will get wrapped around the baby's neck if the baby wraps it around while its moving. Thats the only thing that could do it, not raising your hands above your head or anything like that.

And as for Grandma knowing it all, our grandmothers must have the same ideas.

Total myth. The placenta with cord can attatch anywhere in the uterus (top, bottom, side, diagonal). This means that the cord can be located anywhere in the uterus depending on the placement of the uterus.
Furthermore, the cord has a protective covering over it called: Wharton's Jelly, the prevents it from knotting and getting wrapped around your baby. The chances are slim no matter where your arms are.

To my knowledge it is just a precautionary old wives's tale. But as a child as well as my child not having to go through surgery, I won't say that some old wives's tales don't have merit.

I really doubt it would cause that as that I don't remember the doctors warning me of that when I was pregnant. (6 years ago) I think she just is concerned.

Plus if you reach to far you could pull a tummy muscle and that would be uncomfortable for the both of you. I would Probably keep the reaching to a minimum for the safe side, but don't over worry.

I have heard that too! I h ave three kids and one had his cord so wrapped around his neck they had to rush him out the room. Thankfully he made it. I don't know if it was because I raised my arms up over my head or not. But why would you want to take any chances. Grandma's know a lot more than they are given credit for. I wish I still had mine.

Its bullshit! the worst that can happen is a pulled muscle for you. The cord and amniotic fluid work together to prevent this from happening!
