I am wheelchair bound, due to a spine & spinal cord injury. This has only affected my legs. But I find that people in Europe & America treat me like I am contagious or brain dead. Although I have found that people from the Middle East onto Far East, have no problems in treating me as an equal. And apart from offering assistance, I am just another human being

I don't know, its disgraceful the way some people go on, just because ur wheelchair bound doesn't mean you're any different to anyone else. Sorry i've no answer to ur question but i have to say i feel very strongly about these dumbfounded attitudes people have for no reason. If its any help there is some of us in Europe that aren't so stupid. Racism is another thing that really gets to me, what is wrong with people. Hopefully the world will change someday so that everyone no matter who u are is treated equally and with respect.

Because we live in such a materialistic wolrd, the ignorant unfortuntaley are most people and they believe that image is everything. I agree with you though, I work with young people with varying degrees of disability, the majority of whom use a wheelchair or other mobility aids and we go away every summer to the lake district, When people ask what we do I tell them, caving, climbing & abseiling, canoeing, kyaking, sailing, and so much more, they seem shocked at my answer. I generally remind them to close their mouths and open their minds, either that or I ask them have they not heard of Steven Hawkins. Persoanlly I say it is their loss not yours you just be you and be happy who you are for the opnion of narrow-minded people should prove that their opinion is irrelevant..

You are another human being...So is my father in law that is a Quadriplegic. I have no problems with you. As for the rest of the world I have no answer for them. I like the one who wrote that you remind others of their own frailties. However you remind me of the strength of the human race to triumph in the face of adversity. You are a non-contagious, and alive person and no matter how anyone treats you or looks at you...you are still a person. Don't let others view of you affect the way that you view yourself.

i have no idea really, but i must confess i try to stay away from people in wheelchairs as much as possible...they make me soo uncomfortable. I dont know how this came to be but I just dont want to say the wrong thing around them or something...i am prone to sticking my foot in my mouth. I think the real big problem is that we are not taught that people in wheelchairs are just as capable of most of the things we do. Most of us (including me) just were never shown how to interact with people who are different. I know a lot in school we were toaught how to treat others...but all of the pictures were always of two "normal" children. They never showed us books and things with pictures of handicapped people....uggh i wish i had more time to make this make more sense...lol...but im in a time crunch....best of luck to you in figuring this problem out. hope i helped even if it was the tiniest bit...

Sorry. We dont mean to. I had a girlfriend once many years ago who once had polio. She had the leg iron stuff on. And it was really difficult, even going for a walk was a problem. She always thought that I was only going "out" with her because I felt sorry for her but she was gorgeous and real fun to be with.
I am pleased that that woman on the X factor has got through, I can imagine the problems that it caused. Bet she doesn't win though.
Try making it your lifes work to educate people, but try taking them with you not preaching to them they will just think that you are mad as well.
I think most of the problem comes from "Talking down" to an adult. We are not used to it. We are used to talking down to a child, but it's a whole different ball game to talk down to an adult.
You sound really nice and please use your time to educate us idiots.

Hi there Clive.
I can only speak for myself and have NEVER thought anyone in a wheelchair is not worthy of my attention. I am very sorry that you find us to be ignorant of you, come to Tunbridge Wells and I will show you round a lovely town. Take care, Tim.

Because people are rude and they are idiots. It's not just people in wheelchairs who are treated like that, but anybody who doesn't look like a norm. People are just plain ignorant.

Nonsense.

How can you class over 400 million people by your treatment by a few idiots.

I think you have a serious chip on your shoulder.

You remind them of their own frailty and mortality. That make them uncomfortable. Sorry, nothing I can do about them.
