Ive found that what works best for me is liquid eyeliner. Pencils are not straight lines and you have to push harder to get the line on. Liquid is very easy to apply. Although, I do use pencils on the lower lids because they dont smear as easy as liquid will, you know, if you happen to rub your eye :)
The key is to do half & half, dont try to make a straight line in one go. Do the inner half first then do the outer half, o/ vice versa, matching them up by starting your next stroke where the first finished in the middle. Its easier to do it this way too because if you want to slightly shape or change the shape of your eye, you have more control by doing it in a smaller stroke.
It is key to have a very sharp pencil or a fresh bottle of liquid liner. If the pencil is dull you will never get a nice line, period. If the brush tip in the liquid is old the liner just does not go on smooth.

How to apply eye liner?
First apply eye shadow, then move on to apply eye liner.
Position your lining device. Hold the lining device as you do a pen or pencil. Turn your hand so the applicator tip is parallel to your eyelid.
If you are in the beginning stages of makeup application, do not use liquid eyeliner.....It can get you real upset.....It's kinda tricky....try it later on after you get the hang of things a little. Instead start with an eyeliner pencil.
Step-1. Using an eyeliner pencil, run the pencil above the upper eyelid lashes right close to the lash line. At first it is best to only line directly above where the lashes are growing, do not extend your line too close to the inner corner of the eye, it might not look right. You can play with extending the liner line later when you feel a little more comfortable with eye makeup.
Step-2. When you have finished lining, lightly smudge the line you just drew. Mostly pencils have a foam rubber smudger on one end. Smudging softens some of the harshness the line may have, in other words, blend the line in a little so it dosen't look like a distinct line. A Q-tip works just as well.
Step-3. After you line and smudge, use a small pointy brush and run a coat of the dark eyeshadow over the eyeliner. Do this if the line looks like it stands out too much, it softens it and is a "must do" step for liquid liner.

If you are just starting out, practice makes perfect! Here are some helpful tips and before you know it you will be able to apply eyeliner in the dark!
Get very close to the mirror in your bathroom, for your right eye, if you are a rightly, put you left arm underneath so that you can pull the outer edge of your eye out to make the surface flatter. At the same time, take the eyeliner and try to draw the straightest line possible VERY close to the lash line.
Do the opposite for the other eye. Keep practicing this before you move on to the lower lashes, which can be a little trickier, but you will use a similar technique as well. You also might want to try a wider eyeliner like Styli-Style which has a flat tip that also makes it a little easier to get precise.

Be sure the eyeliner you are using will go on your eye smoothly, if it doesn't try using a lighter to heat up the liner, it will go on much more smoother. You can try putting your finger on the corner of your eye and pulling the skin so that you have a straighter line to deal with. Also, to get a better grip on the pencil, try putting a small rubberband around the base of it. If you make any mistakes, which happens to EVERYONE even professional make up artists...invest in pointed tip Q-tips, those clean up very well! Good luck!

Pencil eyeliner -put you index finger in the crease at the end of your eye just below the end of your brow and pull the eyelid outwards so your eye shuts, then put your eyeliner on running it in the straightest line posible along the eyelash from the middle ooutwards. Works everytime.
Liquid liner - eye half open and keep steady hand use a cotton bud to clean excess and mistakes.

Try using a powder eyeliner or an eyeliner pencil. They're much easier to use than the liquid kind and they make a softer looking line.

It's like painting:to get a perfectly straight line you need the correct brush -a line brush- if you don't have one just sit down and get close to a mirror ( if you have a mirror like mine on the wall you may need to stand up), keep your arm steady and try making a line as slowly as possible. It may not work right the first time but keep trying. Some times all you need is practice.

Use a liquid eyeliner and keep your eye lid half open so you can see well.
Then use short strokes instead of long ones, it will help you see how your eye lid is shaped and will look great!

First make sure it is sharp no blobs. Look in a mirror and put it on. For me I have found that if its under the bottom eye lash it works best, it you put it on the eye lid then it ussually turns out after you put your eyeshadow on.
