Depending on the the place of employment, the "first shift" can occur at one of two times. For North America, the default is that the "first shift" is also known as the "morning" shift.

Typically, "first shift" runs from 0600-1400 (or maybe 0800-1600). It's the standard "day" or "morning" shift ...
"Second Shift" is the next 8-hour period (1400-2200, or 1600-2400). Basically, you're working late afternoon and through the evening. It's also known as the "late shift" or "night shift".
"Third Shift" is the last 8-hour period (2200-0600, or 0000-0800). In this case, you'd be working "midnights", because the shift encompasses that time of the day.

For some companies in some countries, the difference is that "first shift" may mean "midnights" ... and everything else moves around the clock accordingly.

Be careful ... some employers do not necessarily operate on 8-hour shifts. In this case, the window rotates based on the length of shift itself. Power plants and some emergency services fall into this category ... often with either 10- or 12-hour shift changes. This may mean you end up with some weird days off in the schedule ...
