In pro ballet, the truth is, yes. Thin is the ideal body type. This has to do with lines of the body and partnering. The men must be able to lift the women in pas de deux.
Like other people have said, there are companies out there that are meant for dancers with more average/bigger body types though!

You don't have to be skinny to dance, that's silly! Professional dancers end up being pretty skinny, that's true. But that's more like a result then a conscious effort. All the professional dancers I know didn't become skinny on purpose, or do anything special to remain that way. They dance like 6-8 hours a day, and that's one heck of a workout. They do all sort of other stuff like yoga and gym workout which also is not at all fattening.
You can't be seriously obese for obvious reasons (you can't bend, you can't jump and noone can ever lift you), but you don't have to be skinny. You need to be fit and you want to look good and create good lines pleasing to the eye, but that doesn't automatically mean skinny.

There are plus size professional dance troupes out there. "Big Moves" is one of them. So it's not always the case, but certainly, most professional dancers are skinny.
Part of it might be that in order to reach professional level dance one usually has been dancing 8 hours or more per day and at that level of aerobic activity it's kinda hard NOT to be skinny. Another reason might be that the lines of a dancer are straighter if he/she is skinnier. If, for example a move requires the dancer to have their right foot forward, with their weight on the left foot behind then and their back arched and their left hand up behind them, it might not look good if they had a belly sticking out and breaking up the line from their right toes up to their left hand fingertips. The lines simply look cleaner and longer if a person is thin. Look at Antonio Banderas. He was very fit before the movie "Take the Lead" but he lost several pounds so his lines would be cleaner and longer in the movie.

Size tells fitness level. If your height is not proportionate to your weight it will show. Good dancers are trim because being trim the is natural thing to be when you have been working hard at dancing.
Atheletes do not compete to be slim, they are slim as a result of their competing. If you are heavy set it is obvious that you cannot perform the dancing moves at the level that are needed to win a professional competition. I advice that you do a couple of auditions and ask for their advise on how to improve. Then, follow their input and improve. Above all, don't be discouraged and make your dreams happen. Nothing great was ever handed down to anyone.

I hate the word SKINNY! there are companies who still look for certain body types, but now you can find some that only want passionate great dancers. Please DON'T fall into the skinny trap alot of dancer fall into! That can cause serious eating disorders which can eventually kill you! Find out what is right for your body type and go from there. Mia Michaels is not skinny and she is a dance genius! Eat right exercise and remember that this is a lifestyle and no quick fix diet will ever help. Also look into every aspect of dance and find where your passion is! Mine was in teaching. Hope this helps.

start belly dancing.. I love it!! It is hard work, but it is great if you have some curves! It looks sooo much better if ya do. I actually lost a lot of my extra weight while I was dancing. It's a great workout. So no, not all dancers are skinny.... it should be based on skill not size..

in some forms of dance, u don't have to be thin; e.g. salsa, swing, or hiphop - checkout the 'mambo mamas' in nyc - a trio of 'plus' sized mambo/salsa dancers.
I agree with the other answers concerning professional dancing and other forms such as ballet, jazz, or dancesport. A trim, fit body is easier to work with (with or without a partner), and creates more pleasing lines. also, as a result of all the hard work and practice, your body will naturally become trim anyhow.

It's because those in charge think that there is only one kind of beauty. Maybe it's because when you dance professionally it's such hard work that you end up skinny anyway... try out for local dance troupes... also look into belly dancing/middle eastern dance... there are lots of 'normal' women in those troupes that dance professionally... Good luck!

No, but you have to be better than all of those skinny girls. The average age of the working dancer in LA is 18-20. You have to be pretty damn good to make it out there.
