The book should be like a reference dictionary with listings of artist/group name under which would be listed a brief history of origin till date, type of music they perform, names of group members, albums released, highlights on important events or achievements etc. Need recommendations from owners/users of this kind of book.

It seems to have a lot of what you need. I bought it a couple of years ago, but a friend conveniently misplaced it shortly thereafter. PBS wants $65 for it, but it may also be on eBay or Amazon for less by now. PBS is great jazz resouce anyway.

You may also try searches of "jazz encyclopedia" or "jazz history book" or other combinations mixing in rock or blues.

Each one of the categories you mentioned could EASILY be a huge volume by itself.

You question describes the on-line services of Allmusic.com. They also publish books that are the same as their internet site.

I use this site often. It's really thorough, and surprisingly enough the album reviews are really good.
