your not suppose to cut the cable while its plugged in to a live device. It could short out the hardware. please unplug both ends. Otherwise Ive done it many times, used a spliced cable, just as long as it dosent excede 100 meters or 300 feet long for cat 5.

You really shouldnt use the phone line splices if thats what your talking about( removes the twist from the cable), but on shorter runs it most likely will still work.

I think the standard is more conceirned with the twist and color usage.

Not sure. It might work as long as you don't break the existing connection.
