i see all these ads "extras wanted".. but when you call them, they ask you for a registration fee. is there any that doesn't require that? i think i need to get paid rather than me paying them... huh?

To my knowledge there should be no registration fee and you should be leery of those who require one. I was actually an extra in a film myself but it was a very low budget film. I had to wear period clothing and be a passenger on a train (it was set in the 1930's) They provided lunch and I had a good time. Sometimes you will hear of a film that needs extras in your area. A friend of mine was an extra in "Talladaga Nights" when they were doing filming at the Lowe's Motor Speedway. There are probably sites where you can find extra work in your area. You was right for being suspicious...
