I know what each of these are but can a woman see either, or do only pregnant women see an ob/gyn?
If you're planning to have kids in the near should you just go with an ob/gyn?

An ob/gyn is who a pregnant woman sees. A regular gyn does not care for pregnant patients. If you would like to keep the same doctor for both regular gyn appointments AND your pregnancies, you need to see an ob/gyn. However, they can be VERY DIFFICULT to get an appointment with and you risk having long waits and cancellations due to women going into labor.

Hope this helps!

This is just my experience...my first ob/gyn stopped delivering children (a blessing)...therefore she fell behind in the more modern techniques of woman care. She also had no bedside manor and was well into her 80s way past the age to retire (very bad experience).

Just find a doctor that you get along with who is sympathetic to your questions and requests...I found a younger more progressive doctor and even though she is an ob/gyn and I have no intention of having children, has been a good experience and I am very happy with her. Though Tara did bring up a valid point...in an OB clinic you can tend to run into more situations that could cause your doctor to have to reschedule or run late...still, my new doctor is worth it.

The OB in ob/gyn stands for obstetrician, or one who delivers babies and maintains a woman's health through pregnancy.
A GYN is a gynacologist, a physician who specializes in women's repoductive health.
There are some gynacologists who do not do deliveries, they are just GYN after their credentials.
Most are both, after all, would you want to lose a patient to another doc just because they get pregnant?
This of course, does not address the issue of nurse-midwives or nurse practioners who are gynacologists only.

If you are planning on having kids soon I would establish myself as a patient with an OB/GYN.

Most Dr. that just list GYN don't deliver babies anymore.

you can see either
the difference is
a gyn can only deliver by natural birth
if you need a c-section the you need a ob
if you have a ob/gyn no matter how the baby is delivered they will follow you

Almost every gynecologist is also an Obstetric doctor. Meaning pretty much all GYN's deliver babies.
