Because many sanctimonious moralizers are hypocrites. He's not the first Republican to be forced out of the closet.

The fundamentalists are not the biggest group that supports the Republicans. There is also the economic conservatives who like to hoard the public money for their own personal gain.
The Economic Conservatives are the ones that want to take your Social Security away so that you get to be broke without income when you are old, gray and not so gay.(happy)
They also are the ones that fight tooth and nail to defund the government through tax cuts to themselves and national debt for the rest of us.
Then there are the rich. They generally love Ronald Reagan because he changed the tax laws and is the father of the Homeless and mentally unstable crises in America. He personally attacked the worse off population in America by emptying the mental hospitals in California and changed America forever, it seems.
One of the current drafting notices for the Republicans is, "Bring me your hypocrites and greedy rich so we can steal the Middle Classes pensions and get away with murder while posing as a goody-two-shoes nice guy in a $1000.00 suit and free golf trips across the seas with pretty young ladies easy to squeeze.
So you see, the Republicans are an interesting group that band together as if it is a big joke to start wars and steal little old ladies pensions and tours.
One other group of Republicans are the New Republicans who are made up of young intellectuals and supporters of Israel and banded two gether to support the Iraq war even before it started. And they are ones for the most part who are still supporting the Iraq War for the twisted idea that it benefits Israel.
So Mr. phony Foley was a beloved and protected member of the Republican Party who looked the other way which is the only way the the Republicans know how to look.
Great group isn't it!

He was a republican because all crooks and pervs in politics have to choose a party to be affiliated with. Right is right, and wrong is wrong, to condemn or condone because of a political party is hypocritical. That is why we are a country divided. Gay is not the proper term for what this man is. He was a predator, he was "grooming" these boys, for his sick little fantasies, and if the FBI had done the right thing he would be behind bars. They should have set up a sting operation and nailed him. REP, or DEM. He is a disgusting PIG.

This man is not gay. He is a pervert. He is only claiming to be gay because that is what either his lawyer or his publicist told him to say. After he gets caught he is suddenly an alcoholic and he was suddenly abused by a priest when he was young. Hmmmm What will he say next? Maybe his parents beat him or molested him or maybe he will say that he has some kind of mental illness.

Well, when he IM'd the teenager and asked about handjobs, he was demonstrating conservative values, hence his Republican affiliation.
Had he asked about a ******* or straight-up gay sex, then he'd be demonstrating liberal values, like the Democratic party.

Probably because he is a hypocrite like the rest of them. I'm sure that at some point it was more beneficial to his political career. Like most people in politics, it's not about his beliefs it is about POWER.
