Having said that, What do you think are the attributes necessary for one to be a good official? Overall, do you think officials are proficient in their chosen sport? Would you ever become an official?

While I appreciate all those that have taken the time to answer this question, what I was really looking for were serious answers to the question. Just saying that officials are not any good doesn't really answer the question, does it?
Think to yourself what is wrong with officials and then answer with what needs to be done to improve them.

Hope this clarifies the question a little more.

You need to have a good idea of the rules. Part of why people claim full-time officals would be better. I don't think it really would help but it makes a good execuse. I don't think I would want to be an offical myself. I don't want to sit and learn the rules so I can do the job properly, although seems like some of those who are officals don't want to either.

In the SEC, they have proven to be either uneducated in the sport of football or crooked. For the most part, anyway.

If I could be an official, I would go for it. I probably know more about making correct calls than they do!

Sure, but they deserve it.
They should be able to see and hear.(obviously many of the current ones can't)
Not unless proficiency and incompetency are synonomous.
No.
