Akeelah and the Bee
I have to tell you, this was a true gem! I watched a baseball game live at the park, and returned home quite late, around 8:30, and expected to fall asleep in bed. I just happened to put this in the DVD player and expected my son and wife to watch for about 5 minutes, than look away. ...
45 minutes later, their eyes were locked on the screen, and ready to stay up until 10:30 to finish the movie! It was that damn good!
Not quite sure what pulled me into this movie. I just had that magical touch, that Midas touch if you will, which pulled you into the story-line, and made you want to believe in Akeelah, and believe, even if by some miracle, that she was good enough to qualify and maybe, just maybe win the contest.
Laurence Fishburne and the little girl Keke Palmer truly shined in this special gem of a movie. Angela Basset was also certainly great. Did you not love this young actress Keke? I would love to see her succeed in more movies. I thought she was terrific.
I also thought the other actors were great. I thought it interesting that they had an Amerasian, playing Akeelah's nemesis, as the son of two Asian parents. I was wondering why a Caucasian person did not play one of his parents. I thought the father role was done well by the well know Chinese actor. But the mother said nothing, and was ineffective.

Watched the 1950's version of the film "Imitation of Life" about a very light skinned Black girl who goes to live with a white family when her Black mother gets a job in the house as a maid. She "passes" for white and keeps denying that her mother is related to her..
Pretty sad really that society can be so oppressive that people have to pretend to be something other than what they really are...
In the end the girl leaves home and tells her Mother never to contact her again.. her mother dies without seeing the daughter who turns up at the funeral and begs forgiveness at her dead mother's coffin... but obviously it's too late!!!

I just watched Fearless and loved it. It was an excellently made film. The main message from the film is that our most dangerous enemy is within us and that resonates with me on so many levels. We sabotage ourselves in our jobs and our relationships and we don't work to our full potential and so much more. It's self-discipline and focus that separates winners from losers and not luck, or education or money.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I can't say it "moved" me but I read the book when I was a kid and it brought me back to younger days, filled with wonder, fantasy and imagination.
