This started when I installed a Trendnet Gigabit NIC on my HP a1120n desktop with AMD 64 3500+. My onboard NIC kept dropping connections and failing after I installed a EVGA 6600gt video card and an EVGA Tv tuner. I also upgraded my power supply to a 450 watt power supply. Tech support at HP and COMPUSA couldn't find out what was wrong with the onboard NIC so I decided to buy and install a new one. Now, I do not get dropped connections but whenever I download files especially installation files, windows updates (sometimes), RAR, ZIP, EXE files, I always have trouble like in the case of RAR and ZIP files, it says corrupted archive or something. I tried downloading via my laptop and then transfered the file via network and it would still fail on my desktop.

Please help!

Thanks!

I have done all sorts of scans already. I have reinstalled WINRAR and WINZIP but I still get the same problems. Definitely no virus in my system also.

When I tried downloading via my laptop, I tested the rar/zip files first and uncompressed them in my laptop and they work great. But when I transferred the rar/zip files via my network, it became corrupted again. As it is right now, any installation, exe, rar, zip and some other files that go through my NIC gets corrupted. I have tried transferring the file via a USB memory stick and the files worked fine.

I am thinking there is something wrong with the setup of my rig. First the onboard NIC goes nuts and then the Trendnet.

Any advise?

I am sure that my system does not have any virus because I did a complete factory restore. I uninstalled all the upgrades I put it and then did the factory restore.

Funny thing is, after the restore (and BEFORE I installed back all my upgrades) the onboard NIC started working fine...

After I have installed all my upgrades (with the exception of the TRENDnet NIC) the onboard NIC worked for a couple of hours and after shutting down and using it after a day, it started going nuts again so I had to install the Trendnet NIC again and back I came to my present problem.

Do the archives appear as corrupted on your laptop too?

Maybe you need to reinstall WinRar/Winzip on your desktop. Definitely do a full virus scan, and run scandisk to ensure the hard drive is ok. Also, check in your BIOS setup, make sure some kind of virus checking isn't turned on there...

I was going to suggest the power supply upgrade, but you've already taken care of that- it's a common issue with newer PCI-E video cards.

Try transferring files via a USB thumb drive or something just to see if it's the NIC that's ruining things.

I suspect you have a virus. Most times, a virus effects exactly the types of files you have listed. I have had a variation of the worm that did exactly the same thing. Incidently, if you aren't already using it, download the winrar and see how you like it. It's great for unzipping, especially rar files. Run a virus scan, and good luck.

Shift + Right click on any of the zip / rar file.
A menu will be displayed, there you select "Openwith" option click
"Choose program..."
Open with dialog box is displayed.
Now chose winzip / winrar.
Select the check box in front of " Always use this programe to open this kind of file."
Thats all ...Next time you click a zip , it will be automatically opened...

Try to scandisk your hard drive, and do a surface scan I suspect bad sectors in it...
