Are there any house-hold remedies or do I have to purchase an item to make it smell better?

pour some baking soda down the drain and then pour in some white vinegar. It works like a charm. do this once a week and it will wash out the stale odors.

For household remedies the only thing I know of is cutting up a lemon into chunks and grind them up in your disposal.

At your local Walmart you can purchase a few different solutions that clean your disposal and leave a fresh scent. For example; Disposal Care which cleans and deodorizes.

use baking soda for the cleaning and lemons for a good smell after the baking soda.

Run lemons and ice cubes through it and rinse it with bleach water once a month.

pour baking soda down into it and let it sit there for a few hours....that stuff soaks up all kinds of odors and will work wonders!!! And is also cheap!!! (i am a penny pincher)

Yup, Lemons are your best bet. Then throw in some ice, it'll help clean your blades.
