It depends. With my son my water broke at 2 cm, with my daughter i was 4 cm, overdue, and they broke my water. Right now im 37 weeks and dialated to almost 2 cm (as of my appt last thursday) but still nothing. I think it's different with every pregnancy. Some women can dialate almost completely before thier water breaks.

That varies. In 5 of my 6 pregnancies they had to break my bag of water during labor. And from my experiences that really speeds up dialation and the progress of labor. The only pregnancy that it did break on its own I wasnt even in labor(40th week). Had to go to hospital because they want you to go in when your water breaks. But didnt have him til following morning--4 hrs of labor. In 3rd pregnancy was 4 cm dialated for 12 days before I went into labor and they still had to break my water during labor.I wish you an easy labor.Congratulations on your new baby!!!

Did you lose your plug yet? Are you having a little cramping? Cramps are labor pains....the amniotic fluid acts as a cushion for the contractions so pain increases when the water breaks. I have thick membranes so mine had to be ruptured each time. You can't go by anyone elses experience when it comes to your water breaking......there is no telling.
But if you have lost the plug, and if your tummy starts doing funny thing...I felt the tightening but had no pain...then your in labor. I went to the dr and was 3 cm, he said he would probably see me that night...he did too. I didn't tell anyone I was in labor or that I had lost my plug until my best friend came home from work....they way I got a good meal before I had to go in!

it just depends. I fyour water bag is strong then the doctor might have to actually break your water for you. Not everyones water breaks. This does not hurt or anything, but they will take a plastic hood and scrape away some membranes to weaken the water bag. Good luck. I bet you have that baby in the next 4 days.

It may not break it is very unlikely that your water will break at home. if you start to have contractions time them. I was only 3cm dil. and i lost my plug at 3:00 in the morning but my water didnt break I had my daughter the next morning. so just watch for the plug and time the contractions.

They might not break at all!! Mine broke as her head popped out with my last child.
My suggestion is to get into a lovely hot bubble bath and stay there with a magazine or good book for as long as possible. This will soften your cervix and make you dilate quicker. It also eases pains.
My prediction is you will have baby in next 24 hours if you do this. Just relax, eat some food for energy and prepare yourself mentally for babies arrival.
Good luck.

sometimes, it breaks before contractions even start. or sometimes the doctor will break it for you to get things progressing. but I have never heard at a certain time frame of dialation that it will break.
I know my doctor had stripped my membranes to help things along, maybe your will too.

There is no set stage when your water breaks and sometimes they break it for you in the hospital. Good luck and congratulations. You might want to try doing squats. That will put more pressure on your cervix causing it to dilate more and possible break your water.

It is different with each pregnancy. My water broke with my 1st baby BEFORE I had any contractions and dilation. With my other 2 pregnancies, the doctor broke the water when I was almost fully dilated. The good news is that either way, you will be having your baby really soon, Congrats!!
