well, as for me, these are the things i'll ask :-
1. family background
2. circle of friends
3. what he'd like to do as a living
4. how does he picture married life should be
5. what are his goals and principles in life
...etc.
the above questions are just a few to name.
i find those questions important because i would like to find
out if his personality and my personality match. also, to find
out if what we want or see in the future is align. if there's a
match, a future for us will surely look promising. however, if
i find i dun quite agree with his way of life and thinking, i'd take it
as a sign i shouldn't waste my time changing the guy to be
someone i want him to be, which clearly, he isn't.

you could ask him what he wants in life. what he wants to do when he gets older what he has set for his life?
