To calculate the percentage, you:
STEP A: Divide the number by 100
STEP B: Multiply the answer from step A by the percentage
so for this case:
100 (the original number) divided by 100 = 1
1 multiplied by 40 (% figure) = 40
so your answer is 40

Divide 50 by 100 = 0.5
Multiply 0.5 by 30 = 15
ANSWER = 15

Percent/percentage (%) by definition means one part in a hundred. Therefore, to find the % of a number you first divide by 100 and then multiply by that number.
e.g.
20% of 500 is
20 divided by 100 is .2
now multiply that answer .2 by 500 and you get 100
Therefore 20% of 500 is 100
In your case it can be a little confusing because the number used (100) is also used in determining a percentage. However, if you use the formula you will always get it right.

40 divided by 100 ( .4 ) multiplied by 100 = 40
