Ah, the great debate: the thank you to do away with cats and what do you do with feral cats or strays in case you’ve caught them. i will with the aid of no potential try to convince you that i'm the two an ethicist (guy or woman who makes ethics their occupation) or a professional animal administration respectable. What i'm going to assist you recognize is that a majority of those persons working interior the animal manage technique tend to agree that a catch-neuter-liberate utility is probable the main effective technique to handle undesirable cats and feral colonies. yet (and this would be a sizable “yet” for some human beings) that technique doesn’t get rid of cats, does it? properly, no longer rapidly besides. All too probable feral cat colonies bypass disregarded or skipped over for a ways too long, producing cats which would be too “wild” to have confidence human beings. The guy or woman cats in a feral colony are released, at the same time as a kitten that's everywhere between 4 and 10 weeks historic is a doable candidate for socialization or domestication. After that, you’re observing the potential for a feral cat being feral for the the remainder of its existence, without a danger for adoption. this is been reported, the pass sensing sprinkler concepts, in spite of the shown fact that I figured i will could placed the assumption up over here on the different hand of burying it in the object. some human beings might think that frightening a cat with an computerized sprinkler is inhumane. i might beg to variety and invite them over to look at your neighbor’s cats getting soaked. no longer something, in my handbook, is funnier than a moist cat.

Get a have a heart box trap. Catch the cat. And spray the heck out of it with a garden hose for a minute or two while its caught inside. When you open the trap the cat will leave and he will not want to come back. It worked for a cat that used to poop in my kids sand box anyway. It's just water, it won't hurt them, it just really upsets them. I know it sounds mean but cats can't be reasoned with. They can only be intimidated.

Spread moth balls around you yard this will detour more than just cats. I have read some of the other answers - No it's not illegal for cats to run around outside. Hurting animals is illegal weather you shoot them or let a dog loose on them. The health department will not provide traps for cats they are not rodents!

Get a dog :)

Some people have had luck with putting those round toothpicks in their flowerbeds sticking straight up and down burried halfway in the ground. Cats will not like trying to negotiate the spikes in the dark.

The city should provide animal traps to you - they are human - they are basically cages that you put bait in, and it slams shut when the animal takes the bait.

Another alternative is to very quietly sit on top of your roof with a BB gun, or a very low-powered, quiet hunting rifle, and wait for the little ******* to show up at night - then let them have it - one way or another, they won't be shitting in your yard anymore.

That, or you can get a very ferocious dog.

Some kind of trap is my suggestion.

My advice is that you call a local vet or animal control center near you. See if they can give you the advice you're looking for.
