You'll need to make good contacts; people who in the future you think will likely be in some sort of powerful position (or will be wealthy and can finance your campaign). To get a taste of leadership and campaigning (it's MUCH more difficult than it seems, especially at big universities) try entering your student government. Run to be a student senator and see how much effort goes into that. Then multiply that by a few million and you've got the effort it'll take to become elected. A few things to keep in mind are 1) more senators were lawyers than any other pre-congressional profession; 2) senate campaigns, particularly open ones, can cost millions of dollars so make sure you have the cash/supporters before running, 3) you can't be a senator until you're at least 30 and must have resided in the US for at least the 9 previous years before you run (and of course be a citizen), 4) during your summers, try to land internships with Senators, Congressmen or some sort of congressionally-affiliated entity (lobbyists, think tanks, etc...) to get a real taste for it, build an impressive resume, and hopefully even get offered a job (it happens more than you'd think) 5) don't aim to be a senator. Most who do it didn't start thinking about it that early on. They become successful lawyers/doctors/businessmen and then are pushed into running by their friends and even local parties. A lot start off small, and enter local politics, moving up to state legislatures, the US congress, and finally governorships or the senate. It's very difficult, but if you set your mind to it, anything's possible.
I wish you the best of luck, both in college and (hopefully) in the Senate.

There is no college requirements for becoming a Senator. You don't even need to graduate high school. It may not be a successful campaign, but you never know.

Get into politics early and either make a bunch of dough, or get someone to give you money.
