Republicans constantly whine about the democrats increasing government spending and yet recent democrats have had surplus's while the republicans always put us in debt. Why is that?

Their idea of smaller government doesn't include military and war expenses. They also seem to like cutting taxes on the wealthy, despite the fact that it has very little real economic impact to do so. If they want to cut taxes to spur the economy, they need to cut them on the middle class.

So more military spending plus less tax revenue coming in equals big deficit. Simple math really.

Many reasons. Biggest reason: The Republicans in office are merely Democrats with a greater tendency to appease the "family values" crowd and who are slightly averse to expanding the welfare state.

Anyone who thinks this country has been moving to the right is fooling themselves. You can either march to the left like the Republicans do or you can run in that direction like the Democrats. Small government conservatism is dead in Washington.

It takes years for the long term effects of budgetary changes to be felt. Sometimes one gives credit to a president for an effect that was created from a previous administration.

Also, if you are referring to our current situation, you have to consider we are engaged in a war on terror. This is financially costly. We can debate on if this cost is warranted, but that is another question.

In general, the republicans stand for less federal government and less entitlements, and less taxes as well. The thought is that this will stimulate the economy, which seems to be the case. Sometimes, the taxes are easier to freeze/reduce but entitlements are slower to reduce, therefore creating a short term deficit, albeit a long term economic boon!

Thanks for asking and allowing me to clear this up for everyone.
