It is a fair question.
I've read all the replies and found some interesting responses.
I agree that if a black person calls another black person 'n***er', it can hardly be construed as a shared insult.
However, it is understandable for a non-black person to find this confusing.
It it the reason why we are essentially forced to ask 'When is an insult not an insult?'
A homosexual man will call another one 'queer' and not be offended. However if a 'straight' man were to say the same thing, this would be considered an insult.
We are indeed a strange species.
PS
I found that when I tried to put the word ****** in it came out as you now see it. This kind of proves my point. It makes an insult appear where one is not meant to!

The connotations of the word coming from a white person carry a loaded history of slavery and oppression that are not there with another person of the same race. I believe it has come to be a term that is similar to "brother" between two black people and more power to them for taking back the words that were once used against them and giving them a new, more positive meaning.

I wouldn't call a German a Nazi despite the fact that it has come to mean someone who is exceptionally harsh or strict with rules.

It's about what the word means to the person that is called it, not what the person using the word thinks!

Theres no real problem of ppl with the same ethnic background calling themselves names because we all do it,although they could do with a different name calling than the N**** stupidity word, its easier to accept an Irishman telling jokes about the Irish,Jews telling Jokes about the Jews I saw Bill Bailey do one on the British very funny but if someone else said the same joke from somewhere else it would have offended a lot ppl, because thats all it is.And quite understandable when someone outside makes comments about other ppl types and backgrounds should feel upset.
So really my view is, its not a problem( apart from the word some use) whether its right or wrong.

Because years ago when white people were classed as first class citizons and black people were 2nd class (especially in america) white people called them that as an insult, it was like callin them something horrible so even though they use the term themselves they still feel insulted when white people say it to them. If it was the other way around how would u feel.....

I guess when someone White uses it, the negative connotation is automatically attached to the word and the complexion of the person. Unfortunately, this is what happens when my people use that derogatory word and then get pissy when someone of a different race uses it. But, in a nutshell when someone White uses it, we have to figure where is it coming from: a place of hate, or comraderie?

If you weren't a total idiot, you would've been smart and looked this question up in the Yahoo Answers search engine. This question has literally been asked hundreds of times and I'm tired of hearing it.

Black people saying the "n" word is like me calling a white person a cracker or a honky, it's a term of endearment, that's all.

My husband is black [I am not] and I have asked this question, from what I can gather it is very much MORE the younger ones that use this term.................the older generation recalls the hate that was associated with this word and do NOT want it coming out of any ones mouth...............the younger ones use it amongst them selves to make it a less important word..ie we use it so it takes the word away from when you use it BUT in my opinion NO ONE regardless of their motives should use this word period, and I have and will again, remove ANYONE from my house that uses this word.

Oh and the n word is just as hateful when used as when the word cracker is used by anyone, have actually slapped someone in the mouth for using that one at me in my own home.........lol and then removed them..........

You must first study and have a full understanding the history and behavioral patterns of Europeans. Then you must study and have an understanding of the effects of their colonization of Alkebu-lanian (Afrikan) people all over the World. With out this understanding, you will only be able to response to any contradiction in society from a shallow and non-progressive perspective.

It has to do with white people calling us that just to be mean. You used the word for 400 years, now it is ours. I wish everyone will stop using the word but in the mean time, you are not allowed to say it and that is final.

The word comes from the Spanish negre which means black.

In 19th century America, black people called themselves n*gger. However, white people used it to mean slave. Now if a black person says it, it's probably a term of endearment; but if a white person says it, it's a sign of disrespect.

It's not the words we use that make us racist, it's our attitude to other people.
