example: the Mets put Orlando Hernadez on the IR, are the Mets allowed to "call up" or replace his spot on the playoff roster?

The roster deadlines are gametime of the 1st game in a series. As such El Duque was left off the roster because of his injury. The previous poster was correct in stating that players cannot be replaced mid-series.

It is also important to note that a pitcher officially replaced because of injury can only be replaced by another pitcher for the Divison Series... I'm not sure if the same rule applies for roster changes made for the Championship Series.

Yes, but only in the begining of each series. Anyone placed on the 40 Man Roster on Sept 1st are eligable for the post season. (Sept 1st, because that is the last time teams can trade for players, July 31 is the trade deadline but teams can still trade players via the waiver until the midnight Eastern time on Aug 31st. ) So if a player is injured during the series they are left off the 25 man roster for that series and somebody else is placed on it. Each Manager has until 10 AM of the first game of the Series to submit their 25 man roster.

by the way Orlando Hernandez was injured before the 10 AM Deadline. and was replaced by (P) Royce Ring and there are no DL during the post season, since they can only be replaced by the 40 man roster.

A team can only replace an injured player at the beginning of each round. So according to your example the Mets will not be able to replace his spot on the roster unitl after the y advance to the next round
